PUPIL EMPOWERMENT

INTENT
We recognise that personal development is as significant as academic achievement in preparing pupils for future success. In an evolving global context, shaped by technological advances such as artificial intelligence and automation, we are committed to equipping pupils with the knowledge, skills and attributes required to thrive in modern Britain.
Our aim is to develop empowered, confident and resilient learners who take ownership of their learning and make informed decisions about their futures. We place a strong emphasis on building pupils’ self-esteem, independence and essential ‘soft skills’, including communication, adaptability, creativity and critical thinking.
IMPLEMENTATION
Pupil empowerment is embedded across the curriculum and wider school life. Our curriculum is enhanced through a carefully planned programme of enrichment, designed to develop pupils’ resilience and cultural capital. Educational visits, trips and residential experiences are strategically linked to curriculum intent and provide meaningful opportunities for pupils to connect their learning to real-world contexts. Pupils benefit from regular engagement with local and national resources, including museums, theatres, sporting venues and significant landmarks.
We adopt an empowering approach to planning events by systematically seeking and incorporating pupil voice. Pupils are given regular opportunities to share their views through structured suggestion slips, where they can propose ideas or vote on planned activities. This ensures pupils are actively involved in decision-making processes and that their views are meaningfully considered. As a result, events are relevant, engaging and responsive to pupils’ interests, while promoting an understanding of democratic principles.
A broad range of extra-curricular opportunities is available, including competitive sport, inter-school competitions and interest-based clubs. These are designed to nurture pupils’ talents, encourage participation and promote a growth mindset. Our Extended Services Team works in partnership with school leaders to ensure a wide, inclusive and responsive offer, drawing on both internal expertise and specialist external providers.
Opportunities for leadership and responsibility are carefully planned and accessible to our pupils. These include roles such as School Council representatives, Play Leaders, House Captains, Sports Leaders and Eco Leaders, all of which promote teamwork, accountability and pupil voice.

House Captains
Our House Captains are exemplary role models who consistently demonstrate the school’s values. They represent their houses with pride, contribute to whole-school events, and foster a strong sense of belonging and team identity. Through this role, pupils develop leadership, organisational and communication skills, while encouraging others to engage positively in school life.
Play Leaders
Play Leaders support positive behaviour and inclusive play during social times. They organise structured activities, encourage participation and support younger pupils, helping to create a safe and purposeful play environment. This role develops pupils’ social skills, empathy and sense of responsibility.
Eco Leaders
Eco Leaders develop pupils’ understanding of environmental responsibility and sustainability. They work collaboratively with staff to implement initiatives that support the school’s sustainability goals. This role enables pupils to contribute to school improvement and develop awareness of global issues as responsible citizens.
School Councillors
The School Council ensures that pupil voice is central to school development. Representatives from each class meet regularly to share views, contribute to decision-making, and lead initiatives that improve the school community. Pupils develop confidence in articulating their ideas, engage in purposeful discussion, and demonstrate the ability to think critically and work collaboratively. Their contributions have a tangible impact on school life, ensuring that pupils feel listened to, valued and actively involved in shaping their environment.
Sports Leaders
Sports Leaders promote healthy lifestyles and positive attitudes to physical activity. They organise and lead activities, particularly for younger pupils, and support events such as sports days. Through this role, pupils develop teamwork, leadership and organisational skills while contributing to a culture of active participation.

IMPACT
As a result of this provision, pupils develop strong personal, social and emotional skills. They demonstrate increased resilience, independence and confidence in their learning, and are well prepared for the next stage of education. Pupils can articulate their experiences, interests and aspirations clearly and respectfully.
Through sustained access to enrichment and leadership opportunities, pupils broaden their horizons and develop a strong sense of their place within both the local community and the wider world. They are equipped with the cultural capital and transferable skills necessary for future success.
